Bemidji State baseball team splits on road at SMSU

The Bemidji State baseball team split a road doubleheader with Southwest Minnesota State on Wednesday in Marshall. The Beavers won the first game 3-0 and lost 6-5 in 10 innings.

Senior right-hander Ryan Sander pitched his fourth complete game and second complete game shutout of the season in the first game.

Sander scattered seven hits, posted a career-high 10 strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

The game was a pitcher's duel through six scoreless innings.

The Beavers (18-25, 12-17 NSIC) scored all three of their runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Lewis Baumann proved to knock in the game-winning run when his double scored Matt Baier from third base to give BSU a 1-0 lead.

Colton Smith scored Dylan Webb on a single and Smith later scored on an error to give BSU the 3-0 advantage.

SMSU (10-22, 6-15 NSIC) stranded runners on first and third in the bottom of the seventh.

Jelacie posted his first three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-4. The Beavers had eight hits total.

The Beavers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of Game 2 on a three consecutive walks from SMSU pitchers.

The Mustangs tagged one in the fourth and two in the seventh to take their first lead of the doubleheader 3-2.

BSU responded with a three-spot in the top of the eighth inning for a 5-3 advantage. The three runs came with two outs and off the bat of Baumann as he recorded his first homerun since the sixth game of the season.

He scored freshman Dylan Webb and senior Brian Murphy.

SMSU was down to its last out in the bottom of the ninth when it strung together three consecutive singles off BSU pitcher senior Bryan Jamieson. The Mustangs tied the game 5-5 and forced extra innings.

The Beavers got runners on first and second in the 10th, but couldn't find a way to get one across. SMSU scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning off a wild pitch from Ryan Anderson.

The Beavers had 10 hits to SMSU's 13 in the game.

Baumann went 2-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored. He is just the third Beaver to record four RBI in a game this season.

Webb went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Braun posted a two hit game (2-for-4).

Logan Kalis started the game on the mound for BSU. He allowed the three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. He fanned four batters, but walked five. Jamieson allowed two runs on five hits in two innings of relief.

BSU closes the book on the 2011 season Saturday and Sunday at home against No. 9 Minnesota State University, Mankato at the BSU Baseball Field.

The four-game series serves as alumni weekend for Beaver baseball and Sunday marks senior day for nine student-athletes. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start. Sunday's first pitch is at noon.
