Southwest pulls away late to beat Beaver men

The Bemidji State men's basketball team lost 78-62 to Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday night in Marshall.

The women's team also fell at Marshall by a 57-54 count.

The Mustang men dominated the Beavers (7-11, 4-10 NSIC) in the second half, outscoring them 45-27.

Bemidji State scored the game's first six points, including five from sophomore forward Mason Walters.

Walters finished with a team-high 17 points.

The Beavers were able to capitalize on 12 Mustang turnovers in the first half to give them a 35-33 lead at halftime.

With nine minutes left in the game, the score was knotted at 49. That is when Southwest State took over.

Over the remaining nine minutes, the Mustangs outscored the Beavers 29-13 and cruised to victory.

The Beavers finished shooting just 31 percent from the floor, compared to the Mustangs 56 percent.

Senior forward Pat Cassidy was Bemidji State's other scorer in double figures, with ten points.

Junior guard Bryce Tesdahl, who became BSU's career assist leader in Friday night's loss to Minnesota State-Mankato, scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds, and recorded six assists.
