Beavers open season with exhibition against Jimmies

The Bemidji State women's basketball team will play Jamestown College in an exhibition game tonight at BSU Gymnasium.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. and admission is free.

The Beavers return a strong nucleus of players from last season including leading scorers Jessie Althoff and Sydney Epema. Senior experience on the team will come from Anna Hebrink and Colleen McKay.

Bemidji State hopes to build on last season's 12-15 overall record, which was a nine game improvement over the 2008-09 season.

Jamestown enters the game as the defending Dakota Athletic Conference champion and national NAIA tournament participant. The Jimmies finished last season with a 26-7 record.

The game will mark Megan Larson's first trip back to Bemidji. The BHS graduate and Jamestown sophomore appeared in 11 games last season for the Jimmies.

The Beavers wrap up preseason exhibition play against Division I South Dakota State next Thursday in Brookings.

Bemidji State opens the regular season Nov. 16 at BSU Gymnasium with a non-conference game against Mayville State.

The Bemidji State men's basketball team added an exhibition game to its schedule and will host Wisconsin-Superior Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.

Admission is free and the United Way of Bemidji will accept free will donations at the doors. United Way T-shirts will be given away at the game by Bucky the Beaver.

Bemidji State finished 12-15 last season in the most wins by a Beaver team under fifth year head coach Matt Bowen.

UWS is a Division III school and was 15-11 last season.

Bemidji State opens the regular season on the road at Michigan Tech on Nov. 16.

The home opener at BSU Gymnasium is Nov. 23 against Wisconsin Stout.
