Bemidji State football team's winning streak against Concordia-St. Paul ends

Concordia-St. Paul took a page out of the Bemidji State football playbook and used it on the Beavers Saturday night.

The Golden Bears defeated the Beavers 20-14 and ended a four-game losing streak to BSU behind 227 yards rushing Saturday night at Sea Foam Stadium.

Bemidji State's two touchdowns came in the second quarter on Dustin Kroeplin's 1-yard run in the fourth quarter on Derek Edholm's eight-yard pass to Christian Metz.

Concordia running back Sam Campbell led the Golden Bears with 137 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

Bemidji State fell to 3-3 overall (2-3 NSIC) with the loss and remains on the road next Saturday to face Minnesota State University, Moorhead for the Battle Axe trophy.

Concordia continued its surprising season and improved to 4-2 overall (3-2 NSIC).

The Bemidji State offense was able to move the ball with some effectiveness against the Golden Bears, but timely touchdowns never came in the second half and a late rally fizzled out in the final minutes.

Campbell put the Golden Bears up 7-0 at 6:29 of the first quarter on a five-yard run and Kroeplin tied it at 12:37 of the second quarter on his one-yard score.

Concordia took a 14-7 lead when quarterback Spencer Ohm hit Charles Gilbert for a 31-yard touchdown pass with 3:35 left in the first half.

The Golden Bears extended their lead when Campbell ran down the sideline for a 32-yard run at 8:06 of the third quarter.

Bemidji State's offense was quiet in the second half until a missed field goal early in the fourth quarter kept the Beavers alive and energized the BSU sideline.

That led to Metz's touchdown reception with 6:09 left in the game and a defensive stop gave the Beavers 2:50 remaining to score the tying touchdown.

But the Beavers went four and out when Edholm's fourth-down pass bounced off the tips of Metz' hands. It would have been a first down.

BSU rushed for 112 yards in the game. Kroeplin was BSU's leading rusher with 82 yards in the game. Lance Rongstad was BSU's second leading rusher with 12 yards.

Saturday's game marked the first time this season where BSU has rushed for over 100 yards and lost.

Andrew Schultz had four receptions for 35 yards and Metz had two receptions for 14 yards.

Edholm was 16-for-31 passing for 143 yards and one touchdown.

Concordia quarterbacks James Peterson and Spencer Ohm combined to go 10-of-20 passing for 106 yards.

One key to the game was the effectiveness of the Golden Bear offensive line. In addition to paving the way for the 227 rushing yards, BSU was only able to generate one sack and that came from Rob Wills.

The Golden Bears offense outgained the Beavers offense in yardage 333-255.

Bemidji State was 2-for-2 inside the red zone and was 8-for-17 on third down conversions.

Linebacker Cory Crosby was the leading tackler for the BSU defense with 15 tackles. Safety Brody Scheff had 10 tackles.
