Baseball team loses pair at UM-Duluth
The Bemidji State University baseball team dropped a doubleheader Sunday at University of Minnesota-Duluth, losing the opener 9-3 and dropping the nightcap 9-0.
The Bulldogs raced to a 6-0 lead in the second inning of the first game, taking full advantage of two BSU errors to score five unearned runs.
After five innings the lead was 9-0. Bemidji State avoided the shutout with three in the eighth. Dan Bauer ripped a solo home run and Nick Jelacie belted a 2-run round-tripper.
BSU managed only three hits in the rematch, singles by Brian Ahlers, Riley Hirsch and Chad Hanson.
Bemidji State (13-28, 4-20 NSIC) will host the University of Mary Wednesday. The doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m.
Mankato swept the BSU softball team Sunday, blanking the Beavers 7-0 and 9-0.
Kaitlin Hill had two hits in the opener and Erin Emanuel collected a pair in the nightcap.
On Saturday BSU lost to Southwest State 7-4 and 4-2 in nine innings.
The second game was scoreless until each team scored twice in the eighth. Southwest won with two more in the ninth.
Bemidji State will host Crookston Wednesday in a twinbill beginning at 11 a.m.
The tennis team dropped a 9-0 match to Winona and a 6-3 decision to Upper Iowa at Winona Saturday.
In the loss to Upper Iowa, BSU won at fourth single behind Kelli Christiansen and at fifth singles behind Kara Johnson. The Beavers also won at third doubles.
Sunday found Bemidji State dropping a 7-2 decision to St. Mary's, also at Winona. Johnson and Christiansen won at second doubles and Brittney Greenwaldt won her third singles match.
The BSU women's golf team finished seventh at the Maverick Invitational Sunday at Lake City.
BSU shot 375-368-743. Minnesota State Mankato took the team title with rounds of 324-319-643.
Individually, Lindsay Morgan shot 92-91-183, Gretchen Trosen shot 88-98-186, Kathryn Stoffels shot 97-90-187 and Marisa Mackendanz shot 98-89-187.
Bemidji State fired a 12-over par 300 Sunday and led the field after 18 holes of the Winona State Invitational. The meet was played in Onalaska, Wis.
Heading into Monday's second round BSU held a six-shot lead over Wayne State.
Chris Curb was tied for third with a 73 and Casey Hill was tied for fifth with a 74 after the opening round. James Foss was in 11th at 76 and Jesse Nelson was 15th at 77.
