Women's basketball: BSU rally falls short at St. Cloud

ST.CLOUD — BSU nearly rallied from a 19-point second half deficit but fell short in a 91-80 loss to St. Cloud State Saturday.

Sam Price provided the dagger with a three-pointer to extend the Huskies lead from six points to nine points in the final minute of the contest.

The Huskies jumped ahead to a 6-0 lead thanks to three-pointers from Rachael Moen and Sam Price but BSU seniors Jessie Althoff and Kate Warmack countered with the next eight points to give the Beavers an 8-6 lead after four minutes of play.

Lexy Petermann, Carley Jeffery, and Price each connected from long distance to fuel a 23-6 run that gave SCSU a 29-14 lead with 8:34 remaining in the first half.

BSU’s woes continued as freshman point guard Hanna Zerr suffered a shoulder injury late in the first half. She did not return to the game.

Allison Cordes ended the half with a long three-pointer to beat the buzzer and cut the halftime deficit to 14 points at 49-25.

Warmack scored the first three points of the second half but the Huskies countered with baskets from Moen, Price, and Jessica Benson to rebuild the lead to 19 points at 57-38 with 18:32 remaining in the game.

Tatum Sheley capped an 11-2 run with a three-pointer to trim BSU’s deficit back down to 10 points at 59-49 with just over 15 minutes left to play.

A second three-pointer from Sheley brought the Beavers within single digits for the first time of the second half at 77-68 with 5:38 remaining.

BSU inched closer and trailed by only six points in the final minute but could not complete the comeback.

Morgan Lee led all scorers with 24 points, while Warmack added 20 points and 10 rebounds.

SCSU was led by Price and Benson, who posted 20 points each.

BSU (9-17, 5-17 NSIC) will begin its postseason play in the first round of the NSIC tournament Wednesday at Wayne State.
