Women's hockey: BSU blanks St. Cloud 3-0 in regular season finale

ST. CLOUD — Senior Danielle Williams scored her first goal of the season and senior Jess Havel turned in a 38-save shutout performance as the BSU women’s hockey team topped St. Cloud State 3-0 in the final game of the regular season.

The Beavers finish with a regular-season record of 11-19-4 and 8-17-3-2 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and earned the sixth seed in the playoffs. They’ll travel to third-seeded North Dakota next week for the first round.

Williams got the Beavers on the board just minutes into the first period with an unassisted goal from behind the blue line that beat SCSU goalie Julie Friend.

It was the fourth career goal for Williams, a defenseman from Waconia.

In the second period it appeared that another senior defenseman — Allie Duellman — had put BSU up 2-0 with a power play goal less than five minutes into the frame.

However, Duellman’s goal was called back and the teams played on. It was the second power play goal called back this series, as Kaitlyn Tougas also had one waved off in Friday’s game against the Huskies — a 1-1 tie that BSU won in the shootout.

Stephanie Anderson helped atone for the waved-off score.

The sophomore from North St. Paul notched a shorthanded goal at the 14:24 mark, assisted by Tougas and Ivana Bilic, to give BSU a 2-0 cushion.

The Huskies had two goals of their own called back — one at the very end of the second period and one later in the third period — to preserve the shutout for Havel.

It was Havel’s first victory of the 2013-14 season and her first since Jan. 11, 2013, against Minnesota State-Mankato. That was also the last time the Grand Rapids native recorded a shutout.

Havel had been sidelined with injuries this season and lost playing time to freshman Brittni Mowat but got the start and the victory in her final regular season game. St. Cloud outshot the Beavers 39-25 but Havel stopped every shot.

Tougas added an empty-netter late in the third to round out the scoring.
