WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Bemidji State ties St. Cloud, wins shootout

ST. CLOUD — The BSU women’s hockey team rallied for an impressive two-point Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory Friday night in St. Cloud.

The Beavers used Brittni Mowat’s 30-save effort and Kristine Grenier’s second-period goal to tie the game and force overtime, and after a scoreless extra period Rachael Kelly’s goal in the shootout helped BSU escape with a 2-1 shootout victory and two points.

After St. Cloud’s Julia Gilbert scored early in the first period to give the Huskies (4-24-5, 3-20-4-2 WCHA) a 1-0 lead at first intermission, the Beavers (10-19-4, 7-17-3-2 WCHA) evened the score in the second.

Grenier scored at the 3 minute, 33 second mark, beating St. Cloud goalie Julie Friend with assists from Alex Ehlert and Tess Dusik.

The Beavers appeared to take a 2-1 lead later in the period.

After Christa Moody was called for checking from behind, which was a five-minute major and game misconduct penalty, BSU had an extended power play. With less than 30 seconds to go in the penalty it appeared as though Kaitlyn Tougas had scored the game-winning goal.

Even though the goal initially counted, officials ruled that there was intent to blow the whistle and took the goal off the scoreboard.

In the third period BSU outshot St. Cloud 16-12 but couldn’t net the game-winner.

The teams skated to a scoreless overtime period locked at 1-1.

In the shootout, Kelly scored on her very first try to give BSU the early lead then Mowat stopped all three Huskies attempts to secure the two points.

Despite the two points BSU needed North Dakota to sweep Ohio State this weekend to have hope of overtaking the Buckeyes for the fifth seed in the WCHA playoff (which begin next weekend).

Instead, the Buckeyes shutout UND 2-0 and secured themselves the No. 5 seed; meanwhile BSU will be the No. 6 seed.

The teams return to the ice at 3:07 p.m. today; the final regular season game for both teams.
