BSU SPORTS ROUNDUP: Tennis improves to 4-3 with win over UMD

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji State tennis team went 1-1 in its 2014 home debut, falling 7-2 Saturday to Upper Iowa but defeating UMD 5-4 on Sunday.

In the loss to Upper Iowa the Peacocks put the Beavers in a 3-0 hole early by sweeping the doubles. At third doubles the BSU duo of Abby Vohaska and Anna Markgraf gave the Beavers their best chance to score but lost 8-3 to UIU’s Laura Alvarez and Morgan Winnie.

Upper Iowa extended its lead to 6-0 after taking the top three singles matches, including a victory (6-3, 6-1) for Iris Verweij at first singles. The loss was the first this winter for BSU’s top singles player Shaylin Prout.

The Beavers battled back to get a point from Mikela Kowatsch at fourth singles. She recovered from a 6-0 loss in the first set to defeat Kelly Jachymowski in a tie breaker (0-6, 6-3, 10-8).

At fifth singles Vohaska dropped the first set 6-1, used a 6-4 win in the second to push to a tie-breaker, but ultimately fell to 6-1, 4-6, 10-6.

BSU earned its final point at sixth singles where Markgraf posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

On Sunday the Beavers used a strong effort in doubles play and wins in the top three singles positions to earn a 5-4 victory over UMD.

Prout and Deanie Hatch posted an 8-1 victory at first doubles and Caley

Westin and Bailey Kolles did the same and the Beavers led 2-1 heading into the singles action.

Prout continued her winning ways at first singles with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph., Hatch won 6-3, 6-0 at second and Westin cruised 6-1, 6-2 at third to cap the team victory.

Sunday’s win was BSU’s first at home since the Beavers downed U-Mary 5-4 two years ago.

BSU, 4-3 overall and 2-3 in NSIC play, is off until March 22 when it heads to Sioux Falls to take on St. Benedict’s and Augustana.
