WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: BSU falls to Minot State again, 74-66

BEMIDJI — A scoring drought in each half doomed the BSU women’s basketball team in a 74-66 loss to Minot State Friday at the BSU Gym.

“Those runs were absolutely a difference-maker,” BSU head coach Mike Curfman said. “We had good looks, but we could not buy a basket.”

With the loss, BSU’s losing streak extends to six games, its longest since losing eight in a row in the 2011-12 season. The Beavers fall to 8-13 overall and 4-13 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Alisha Jones took a pair of layups coast-to-coast in the opening minutes of the game to build an early 8-3 for Minot State — one that wouldn’t relinquish.

A 9-0 run for Minot State (15-6, 11-6 NSIC) extended the lead to 25-12 with 6:59 remaining in the first half.

Minot made things difficult for BSU’s offense as a trio of Carly Boag, Christina Boag and Savana Kingsbury prevented Kate Warmack from getting the ball for most of the first half.

Warmack was finally able to get in the scoring column when she put back an offensive rebound with less than two minutes left in the half.

“The thing about both Carly and Christina Boag is that they are so quick,” Curfman said. “They did a good job pressuring Kate and switching it up to give her different looks.”

Freshman Aimee Pelzer, who made her first start of her career, capped off a 12-2 BSU run with a three-pointer to cut the halftime deficit to just a single possession at 27-24.

“It was great to see us battle back like we did,” Curfman said. “We just did not make enough key plays when we needed to.”

Minot was able to maintain its lead despite having its leading scorer Carly Boag on the bench for most of the first half with three fouls.

BSU was held to just 25.8 percent shooting in the first half and had a stretch of over seven minutes without scoring.

Carly and Christina Boag combined to score 15 straight points for Minot State to rebuild the lead back to double digits at 44-33 with 12:45 left to play.

Jones added a pair of three-pointers that highlighted a 12-0 run that increased the lead to 21 points at 54-33 with 10:10 remaining.

A three-pointer from Morgan Lee brought BSU within 11 at 65-54 with 3:10 left in the game, but Minot State would protect its lead to seal the win and complete the season sweep over BSU.

Carly Boag finished 22 points to move into second place in the scoring column in Minot State school history. She added a game-high 15 rebounds for the double-double.

Lee led BSU with 18 points on 4-of-8 shooting from long distance.

BSU will look to get back into the win column against University of Mary today at 4 p.m.
