BEMIDJI — A week after playing one of their best offensive third periods of the season at North Dakota, the BSU women’s hockey team tried to do the same Friday night at the Sanford Center.

Trailing Minnesota-Duluth 4-1 after two periods, the Beavers scored twice in the third period but couldn’t complete the comeback, falling to UMD 5-3 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action.

The Bulldogs (12-10-5, 10-8-5 WCHA) had dominated the Beavers (9-15-3, 6-13-2 WCHA) in the first two periods, outshooting them 10-1 in the first period and 10-4 in the second.

Jenna McParland and Megahan Huertas both scored for UMD in the first period and Ashleigh Brykaliuk scored both UMD goals in the second; BSU’s lone tally came on Ivana Bilic’s power play goal midway through the period.

However, in the third period the Beavers came alive.

Tess Dusik gave BSU a kick-start with a shorthanded goal just 57 seconds into play to cut UMD’s lead in half at 4-2.

Later in the period, Kristine Grenier and Whitney Wivoda connected for an even-strength goal at 7:31. Wivoda fed Grenier to beat UMD goaltender Kayla Black for her sixth goal of the season.

That made it 4-3 and the Beavers played well for the rest of the period — the teams were even on shots with nine.

However, after BSU pulled goaltender Brittni Mowat for an extra attacker with about a minute left in the period the Bulldogs scored on the empty net to secure the 5-3 win.

Mowat made 24 saves and took the loss for BSU while Black made 11 saves for UMD.

The teams return to the ice this afternoon for a 4 p.m. game at the Sanford Center. Tickets for the game are $1 as part of a special event for National Girls And Women In Sports Day.
