MARSHALL — BSU has its first eight-game winning streak since 1973 with a 91-82 win over Southwest Minnesota State Friday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action..

BSU (15-4, 12-3 NSIC) was led by Brock Lutes, Zach Noreen and Maxie Rosenbloom as the trio combined to score 72 points on 27-of-39 shooting.

After Southwest Minnesota State (13-8, 10-5 NSIC) took a 71-69 lead on a Joey Bartlett three-pointer with 7 minutes, 4 seconds left in the game, the Beavers went on a big run to regain their lead.

A pair of three-pointers from Jake Schalow highlighted the big 12-0 run and gave BSU its first double-digit lead of the night at 81-71 with 3:51 left.

Southwest got as close at 87-80 on another Bartlett three with under a minute to go but Lutes and Rosenbloom hit a pair of foul shots in the final minute to help BSU preserve the victory.

Schalow contributed four of the team’s 11 made three-pointers. BSU shot 57.9 percent from long distance.

In the first half, it was Schalow and Lutes who helped BSU jump out to an early 14-8 lead with a pair of three-pointers.

But back-to-back layups from SMSU’s Shaun Condon capped off an 8-0 run for the Mustangs that gave them their first lead of the night at 16-14.

SMSU’s lead got as large as seven points at 25-18 with 10:48 left in the first half.

A three-pointer from Noreen tied the game at 31-31 with 4:54 remaining in the half.

Noreen added a basket in the final minute to give BSU a 39-37 lead at the break.

Neither team could gain any separation early in the second half, but a pair of three-pointers from Lutes and one from Rosenbloom helped the Beavers maintain a 56-53 lead with 14 minutes left in the game.

Noreen and Lutes combined to make four consecutive layups to spark an 8-0 run that extended the BSU lead to 66-57 with 10:42 left in the game.

After BSU’s late 12-0 run the Mustangs made three 3-pointers but BSU hits its foul shots and didn’t waste possessions to preserve the victory.

Lutes led all scorers with 26 points on the night, while Noreen tallied 24, and Rosenbloom netted 22 to go with his 13 rebounds for the double-double.

Nick Smith led the Mustangs with 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting.

The loss for SMSU was just its second at home in NSIC play this season.

BSU will look to make it nine in a row, which would be the fifth longest in school history, tonight at Sioux Falls.
