Women's basketball: Slow start costly as BSU falls at Northern

ABERDEEN, S.D. — The BSU women’s basketball team battled back in the second half but couldn’t overcome a poor first half in a 66-53 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference loss at Northern State.

The Beavers (5-4, 1-4 NSIC) managed just 14 points in the first half as they were outscored 33-14 in the first 20 minutes.

BSU shot just 6-of-31 (19.4 percent) in the opening frame while the Wolves (7-2, 3-2 NSIC) went 14-of-34 (41.2 percent) from the floor.

In the second half the Beavers improved and outscored NSU 39-33. BSU opened the first half on a 7-0 run and had cut the deficit to just four points (37-33) with under 15 minutes to go in the game.

But the Wolves pulled away with a 17-8 run in the next 10 minutes and hung on for the 13-point win.

Sheley Tatum led the Beavers with 15 points while Morgan Lee netted 14. Kate Warmack grabbed 11 rebounds and scored five points.

The Wolves were led by Alison Kusler with 17 points; three others reached double figures for NSU.

The Beavers return to the court next Friday when they host Crookston.
