Women's basketball: Dry spells costly to BSU in loss to Dragons

MOORHEAD — BSU’s offense went through three separate three-minute droughts in the first half of a 94-69 loss to MSU Moorhead Friday in Moorhead.

After trailing early, Moorhead outscored BSU 32-8 in the final 11 minutes of the first half.

The Beavers gained a 13-12 lead on a jumper from Morgan Lee with 11:45 remaining in the first half but it turned out to be the last lead of the night for BSU.

The Dragons countered with a 22-3 run over the next seven minutes to build a commanding 34-16 advantage.

The Beavers scored five straight points to cut the deficit to 13 points, before the Dragons closed the half with a 10-0 run to take a 44-21 halftime lead.

Hanna Zerr had nine points, Kate Warmack eight and Lee four but they were the only Beavers to find the scoring column in the first half.

Moorhead increased its lead to as large as 27 points at 61-34 with 14:24 remaining in the game but BSU used a 21-8 run to cut into the deficit and trailed by as little as 14 points at 69-55 following a 3-pointer from Allison Cordes midway through the stanza.

The Dragons, however, recovered and were able to push the lead back to 20 points and seal the win.

After shooting just 27 percent and committing 10 turnovers in the first half, the BSU offense turned in a better second half, shooting 53 percent from the field with only four turnovers.

Zerr led BSU with 18 points and six assists. Warmack (16) and Lee (13) joined her in double figures.

Morgan Banasik and Meghan Roehrich each scored 20 points for Moorhead.

“You could tell that they were catching in rhythm and not really thinking about it,” Dragons coach Karla Nelson said of the scoring performances of Banasik and Roehrich.

Banasik scored 16 of her points after halftime.

“We all played really well together and made that extra pass.” Banasik, who made three of her four shots from 3-point range, said.

Friday’s win was Moorhead’s first is four NSIC contests and the victory snapped a three-game losing streak.

Last week the Dragons lost at U-Mary and at Minot.

BSU (5-3, 1-3 NSIC) will look to end a two-game losing streak when it takes on Northern State at 5 p.m. today in Aberdeen, S.D.
