WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Badgers score 5 unanswered goals to top Beavers 7-2

MADISON, Wis. — Madison Packer had a hat trick as Wisconsin scored five unanswered goals in the second and third periods to defeat Bemidji State 7-2 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play Friday night at LeBahn Arena.

Packer scored once in the second period and two in the third as the Badgers (13-2-2, 9-2-2 WCHA) broke what had been a 2-2 tie in the second.

Wisconsin’s Kelly Joseph and Brittany Ammerman scored the first two goals of the game in the first period but Kaitlyn Tougas answered for the Beavers (7-8-2, 4-6-1) with just over three minutes to play to cut Wisconsin’s lead to 2-1.

In the third period the Beavers struck 40 seconds in. Lauren Miller scored the equalizer with assists from Rachel Kelly and Madison Hutchison to tie the game at 2-2.

However, Josephs struck again to give the Badgers the eventual game-winner at 13:34. The Badgers went on to score twice more in the span of three minutes to make it 5-2 going into the break.

Packer’s two third-period goals gave them a final score of 7-2.

Senior goaltender Jessica Havel made 29 saves for BSU in the loss.

The Badgers outshot the Beavers 36-16; Ann-Renee Desbiens made 14 saves for Wisconsin.

BSU and Wisconsin finish their series Sunday at 2 p.m. It’s the final game of 2013 for both teams and the start of the monthlong holiday break.
