MEN'S HOCKEY: Ferris State scores four first-period goals to sweep Bemidji State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — A poor first period once again proved to be the undoing of the Bemidji State men’s hockey team.

The Beavers gave up four goals to Ferris State in the opening frame, and the Bulldogs went on to defeat the Beavers 5-3 in their Western Collegiate Hockey Association game Saturday night at Ewigleben Arena.

“We’ve had four bad first periods in the past four games,” BSU head coach Tom Serratore told Beaver Radio Network following the game. “We have to get better at that.

“But the guys came back, chipped away and we made a game of it, so I was happy with that.”

The loss is the fifth straight for Bemidji State, which falls to 3-6-1 overall and 3-3-0 in WCHA play. Ferris won its fifth straight game and is now 7-2-0 and a perfect 4-0-0 in the WCHA.

The Bulldogs outshot the Beavers 18-2 in that fateful second half and scored four times on BSU goaltender Andrew Walsh.

Scott Czarnowczan scored twice for FSU in the period, including what would turn out to be the game-winning goal at the 19 minute, 3 second, mark of the period.

Gerald Mayhew and Zach Dorer also scored in the first frame.

In the second period the Beavers got right back into the game with three unanswered goals that cut the Bulldogs’ lead to just one.

Markus Gerbrandt scored on the power play just 1:28 into the second and Brad Robbins added another power-play tally at the 8:28 mark.

Gerbrandt’s second goal cut BSU’s lead to 4-3 but Andy Huff gave Ferris a two-goal cushion with 14:04 to close out the scoring.

BSU outshot Ferris 11-9 in the second period and 10-3 in the third period but couldn’t find another goal.

Sophomore Reid Mimmack relieved Walsh in goal for BSU to start the second period. The Brainerd native was solid in his collegiate debut, making 11 saves and allowing just one goal.

C.J. Motte made 20 saves for Ferris State.

The Beavers were 2-for-6 (33 percent) on the power play. The teams combined for 16 penalties in the game.

BSU returns home next weekend for a series against Alaska-Anchorage — the first of three straight home series for the Beavers.
