Women's volleyball: Bemidji St. falls to Wildcats

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji State University volleyball team lost to No. 18 Wayne State 25-13, 25-16, 25-13 Saturday at the BSU gym.

Saturday’s loss dropped BSU to 5-19 overall and 1-15 in the NSIC while Wayne State improved to 19-7 and 10-6.

BSU had nine attacking errors and only six kills in the first game.

Wayne State set the tone early in the first stanza as it scored the first six points and the early deficit, combined with the attacking errors, were too much for the Beavers to overcome.

BSU’s offense fared better in the second game as the Beavers had 12 kills on 41 attempts.

The Beavers were within striking distance until their own errors doomed them. The score was 12-8 when Wayne State scored five of its next eight points courtesy of BSU mistakes.

In the finale the visitors stormed to an 11-2 lead. Bemidji State drew within seven points on two occasions but Wayne State was never seriously challenged.

Courtney Volkmann had an attacking percentage of .429 on seven attempts with no errors. Volkmann also chipped in 24 assists and five digs.

On Friday BSU dropped a 25-16, 25-19, 25-15 home decision to Augustana.

Rachel Craig contributed eight kills and finished with a .312 hitting percentage.

Bemidji State will hit the road next weekend for its final road trip of the season. The Beavers will face No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul 7 p.m. Friday and then head to Minnesota State on Saturday.
