BOYS BASKETBALL: Jacks take over OT, top Brainerd 67-59
BRAINERD -- The Bemidji High School boys basketball team improved as the game went on Tuesday night at Brainerd, as they went in to the second half down eight, came back to tie after regulation 55-55 and dominated the overtime for a 67-59 win over the Warriors.
Linaes Whiting led the Lumberjacks (17-7) in scoring with 17 points, while Spencer Konecne and Ryan Bieberdorf also hit double figures with 14 and 11, respectively.
Konecne made it a double-double with 15 boards, Bieberdorf had seven rebounds and three steals and Kade Peterson hauled in eight rebounds.
In the first half, the game was in the hands of Brainerd’s Chris Karels. The senior had 14 points at the intermission to lead the Warriors (9-16) to a 38-31 advantage. He finished with a game-leading 20, followed by Joey Sauer’s nine.
Brainerd opened the final 18 minutes with a 1-for-7 stint from the field, allowing the Jacks to work their way back into the contest.
With a minute and a half remaining in the second half, Bemidji took a 54-52 lead, and the score turned into a 55-55 tie by the end of regulation. Karels put up a deep three just before the buzzer, but it didn’t fall.
The Lumberjacks swiftly took over the game in overtime, winning the frame 12-4 for the 67-59 win.
In its regular season finale, Bemidji travels to Detroit Lakes to take on the Lakers at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at Detroit Lakes High School.
