MEN'S BASKETBALL: Mavs sink Bemidji State 87-70
MANKATO -- Minnesota State Mankato outrebounded the Bemidji State men’s basketball team 50-28 on Saturday, making the difference in an 87-70 BSU loss in Mankato.
Before the rebounding woes kicked in, the Beavers (9-12, 6-10 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) jumped out to an early 18-12 lead off a jumper from Zach Baumgartner. But the Mavericks (18-4, 14-2 NSIC) stormed ahead from there, scoring the next 15 points to set up a 23-1 run that put MSU in a 35-19 advantage.
With a 10-3 run sparked by a Jai’Vionne Green jumper, BSU cut it to eight by halftime, 41-33. But Minnesota State Mankato opened the second half with a 9-2 spurt for a 15-point edge, and the Beavers never came back within single digits.
Logan Bader brought Bemidji State within 10 off a 3-pointer early in the final half, but the Mavericks doubled their lead at 20 by the final minute. And, behind its edge on the boards, MSU came out with the 87-70 victory.
Christian Pekarek netted 17 points to lead the Beavers, while Green and Sharif Black each added 15. But Mankato had four players in double-figures, led by Kevin Krieger’s 30 on 11-for-16 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds.
Bemidji State will return to the BSU Gymnasium for an 8 p.m. matchup with Wayne State on Friday, Feb. 2.
