WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: BSU trips up for 84-70 setback

MARSHALL -- The wheels fell off a building second-half rally for the Bemidji State women’s basketball team Saturday night, and Southwest Minnesota State fended off the Beavers for a 84-70 win in Marshall.

After Sierra Senske picked up a pair of buckets in the third quarter, Brooklyn Bachmann added a 3-pointer for a 7-0 run that brought BSU (4-11, 3-8 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) within four points at 51-47. The difference held at 53-49 following two Erica Gartner free throws, but the Mustangs (4-11, 3-9 NSIC) proved too much from then on out.

SMSU worked its way to an 11-point edge after three quarters, which hit 20 early in the fourth quarter to bury Bemidji State before the ultimate 84-70 final.

Southwest Minnesota State had to work in order to put the comeback to rest, however, especially after a strong start. The Mustangs broke out from an 8-8 tie with a 14-0 run, leading to a 23-14 score after the first quarter.

A 9-0 SMSU run late in the second quarter put BSU in a 41-28 hole, but Bachmann ran off five straight with a 3-pointer and a layup, the latter beating the halftime buzzer for a 41-33 game.

Bachmann stayed hot early in the third, capping the quick 7-0 spurt that trimmed the Southwest lead to four at 51-47. But after Gartner’s free throws, the Mustangs claimed 11 of the next 14 points to regain a 12-point lead.

And although McKayla Scheuer drilled a deep three that finished an 8-0 BSU run in the fourth, it only followed in the shadow of an 11-0 spurt for Southwest that made for a 78-58 score just before.

Scheuer’s triple brought the Beavers closer at 78-66, but the Mustangs had no trouble hanging on for the 84-70 win.

Bachmann led Bemidji State with 21 points, but she was held scoreless for the final 15 minutes of the night. Senske added 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench, as well.

For SMSU, Caleigh Rodning poured in 26 points to lead all scorers, while adding eight boards, and Erin Baxter tallied another 13 points.

The Beavers will look to have a short-term memory when they travel to Minnesota Crookston for a midweek matchup with the Golden Eagles, tipping off at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16, in Crookston.
