COLLEGE BASEBALL: Bulldogs sweep Beavers on Opening Day
MINNEAPOLIS -- Opening Day came late Thursday night for the Bemidji State baseball team, and Minnesota Duluth played spoiler in taking 13-0 and 4-2 wins at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
The Bulldogs (2-0) wasted little time in producing offensively, scoring two runs in the top of the first and then six more in the third inning. The Beavers (0-2) faced an 11-0 deficit after four frames, which ultimately expanded to 13 by game’s end. UMD out-hit Bemidji State 14-4 in the shutout win, while BSU never got a runner in scoring position.
Sophomore Isaiah Grancorvitz went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles to lead the Beaver bats. Sophomore southpaw Alec Meyer was tagged with the loss, however, going 2 2/3 innings and surrendering eight earned runs on seven hits while striking out one.
In game two, the Bemidji State offense finally came around by the third inning, when freshman Wyatt White singled in senior Jack Wittwer for 1-0 lead. After Minnesota Duluth tied it in the fourth off a bases-loaded walk, they took a 4-1 edge on a Tyler Midas three-run home run to right.
The Beavers got a run back on a Grancorvitz sacrifice fly in the sixth, but BSU was retired in order in the seventh, giving UMD the sweep with the 4-2 win.
Senior righty Connor McNallan tossed 4 1/3 innings of seven-hit ball for Bemidji State, surrendering four earned runs while striking out five and walking three. Junior Jesse Palafox worked 1 1/3 innings of relief and gave up one hit while recording a pair of backwards Ks.
The Beavers return to US Bank Stadium on Thursday, March 8, for a doubleheader against Upper Iowa at 9 and 11 p.m.
