AREA BASEBALL: Blackduck faces Remer today in Section 8A tournament

BLACKDUCK — The Section 8A baseball tournament continues today and the East Sub-Section action will be held at the Bemidji State University diamond.

The four remaining teams in the West Sub-Section will begin the double-elimination portion of their tournament today at Sacred Heart.

Blackduck is the top seed in the East and the Drakes opened defense of their section title Tuesday with an 11-1 victory over No. 8 Red Lake.

The Warriors trailed only 4-1 until Blackduck ended the game early with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Blackduck (13-2) will meet No. 5 Northland-Remer (4-8) in today’s 10 a.m. opener at BSU. Remer advanced to today’s action by nipping Kelliher-Northome 5-4 Tuesday night. The fourth-seeded Mustangs ended their year 4-8.

Today’s 12:30 p.m. contest at Bemidji State finds No. 3 Lake of the Woods (8-5) tangling with No. 2 Walker-Hackensack-Akeley (9-5). In Tuesday’s first round Lake of the Woods stopped No. 6 Cass Lake-Bena 12-6 and WHA toppled No. 7 Laporte 14-1. Cass Lake-Bena ended its year 0-8 while Laporte finished 0-10.

The winners of the 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. games will square off at 3 p.m. while the losers will meet at 5:30 p.m. in an elimination game. Those games also will be played at BSU.

The three survivors of today’s East Sub-Section action will join their West Sub-Section peers June 4 at Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls. The six squads will continue the double-elimination tournament until a champion is crowned on June 6.
