Bemidji Blue Ox opens season with win over Staples

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Blue Ox men’s amateur baseball team began its 2013 season Saturday with an 11-8 win over Staples.

The game, which was played at the Bemidji State University diamond, was called in the bottom of the seventh because of fog.

Saturday’s contest was a non-conference game. The Blue Ox will play in a conference with Cass Lake, Nevis and Leech Lake.

Matt Baier had three hits Saturday while Sol Schneider had a pair of singles.

Bemidji scored three runs in the second inning and Matt Schneider plated two of them with a double.

Singles by Sol Schneider, Sam Dwyer and Nick Lee produced a run in the third and the Blue Ox erupted for six runs in the fourth.

The inning featured Baier’s double and singles by Joel Conway, Chris Conway and Sol Schneider.

Matt Schneider went the distance on the mound. He fanned four and walked nine.
