BEMIDJI — Drew Peterson ripped a single down the third-base line with one out in the 10th inning Friday to plate Connor McNallan from second base and give the Lumberjacks a dramatic 8-7 victory over Maple Grove in the second game of the Des Sagedahl tournament held at the Bemidji State University field.

In Friday’s late contest Bemidji met Duluth East. Earlier Friday Duluth East nipped Roseau 4-1.

BHS owned a 6-4 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning against Maple Grove but the visitors forced extra innings by scoring twice in the seventh.

The 6-6 deadlock continued until the 10th inning. Maple Grove combined three singles and a walk into a run in the top of the 10th but also had another runner nailed at the plate for the third out.

The Lumberjacks answered with a pair in their half of the stanza and opening the rally was Nick Hovila who reached on an infield error. Billy Baumgartner followed with a sacrifice bunt and McNallan tied the game with a double to left.

Peterson promptly ended the marathon as he smacked his game-winning single to left.

The visitors took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first two innings but BHS sliced its deficit to 2-1 in the third on Hovila’s double, an errant pickoff throw and a wild pitch.

The Jacks forged a 3-2 lead with two in the fourth. Collin Rutledge started the rally with a one-out single but was forced at second on a grounder by Mark Fenner. Parker Lucas kept the inning alive with a single and the bases were loaded after Hovila was hit by a pitch.

Baumgartner capped the stanza with a 2-run single to center.

Maple Grove regained the lead with a pair of runs in the upper sixth but Bemidji countered with three in its half of the stanza when McNallan delivered a single that plated Lucas and Hovila.

The visitors, however, forced extra innings, and the 10th-inning dramatics, with two runs in the seventh.

In today’s tournament finale the Lumberjacks will face Roseau at 3 p.m.
