SOFTBALL: Bemidji posts 1-2 record at Zumbrota

ZUMBROTA – An early wake-up call may have caught the Bemidji High School softball team off guard Saturday as the Lumberjacks dropped two of their three games in this southeastern Minnesota community.

After opening the spring on Friday with 4-2 and 7-1 wins at Monticello the Jacks made the long trip to Zumbrota and began Saturday’s tripleheader against St. Anthony at 10 a.m.

“We were on the field in time but we certainly didn’t come ready to play,” said BHS coach Brad Takkunen.

St. Anthony scored two runs in the first inning and nine in the third on way to a 19-3 victory.

In the second game of the day BHS fared better, edging Burnsville 9-8. In the final contest the Jacks dropped an 11-4 decision to the home team.

St. Anthony Bemidji touched Bemidji’s pitchers for 19 hits. The Lumberjacks managed only seven but they included Bri Neumann’s 2-run round-tripper and Courtney Black’s solo home run.

Hanna Olson added a pair of singles.

Jess Yost was the offensive hero in the win over Burnsville. The senior also was the winning pitcher, tossing a complete game and earning her second win in as many decisions.

Yost blasted a 3-run home run in the first frame, hammered a solo home run in the second and belted her third round-tripper of the contest in the fourth.

Mariah Dahl also had a home run to fuel the 15-hit attack.

Yost finished with six RBI. Jordyn Follis contributed three singles, Olson and Yerbich two singles and Dahl a home run, single and two RBI.

In Saturday’s finale Zumbrota took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. A 5-run fifth iced the victory.

Bemidji scored a run in the third when Jessa Lusby tripled and Dahl plated her with a ground ball.

In the sixth Paige Conkle delivered a 2-run single and Follis had an RBI double in the seventh.

Olson and Yost each contributed a pair of singles.

The Lumberjacks, 3-2, return to duty Friday when they tangle with Fergus Falls and Brainerd in Brainerd.
