Bemidji State softball snaps losing skid

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Bemidji State softball team rallied to end a 12-game losing streak against Southwest Minnesota State at the Morningside Little League Complex in Sioux City, Iowa, Monday morning before dropping the second game of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader. The Beavers won 5-4 in the first game before falling 8-6 in the second game.

The Beavers fell behind 3-0 in the first game of the day, and that deficit held until the fifth inning, when Crystal Bowen drove in Nicole Dupay and Mikayla Osterman singled home Lyndsey Peterson to make it 3-2.

In the sixth inning, BSU gained its first lead of the game with two runs, but the Mustangs knotted the score in the bottom of the frame with an unearned run.

In the top of the seventh, BSU’s Summer Monsrud walked with the bases loaded, putting the Beavers ahead 5-4.

That turned out to be the winning run, as Allie Duellman retired all three SMSU hitters in the bottom of the inning to give BSU its first win since it opened NSIC play on March 28 against Minnesota Crookston. Duellman pitched a complete, seven-inning game while striking out four.

BSU got off to a strong start in the second game, taking a quick 2-0 lead as Peterson blasted a two-run home run but SMSU scored seven runs in the next three innings to take a big lead.

The Beavers clawed back but couldn’t dig out of the hole, losing 8-6. Starter Allison Roberts took the loss in the circle for her third loss of the season.

BSU played another doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in St. Cloud, but couldn’t earn another split.

St. Cloud State swept both games by scores of 5-0 and 11-2. BSU was supposed to host the game in Bemidji, but like many sporting events in northern Minnesota this month, was moved to St. Cloud.

BSU dropped to 8-29 on the year with a 2-18 mark in the NSIC while SCSU upped its record to 25-16 and 10-4.

The Beavers are scheduled to play Saturday at home against Minnesota State Moorhead and at home again Sunday versus Northern State.
