Extended winter alters schedules of Bemidji High School teams

BEMIDJI – The extended winter has put the spring sports schedules at Bemidji High School on hold and what was supposed to be a busy week of action has been turned into five days of limited play.

Today’s original schedule included four BHS events but all have been either cancelled or postponed.

The home baseball doubleheader against Grand Rapids has been moved to May 8 while the girls golf meet at Moorhead has been cancelled. Also postponed is the home softball game against Coleraine but so far no mutual date has been found to play that game.

Today’s tennis meet at Crookston and Thursday’s home triangular against Park Rapids and Grand Rapids also are weather victims and Lumberjacks coach Mark Fodness is hoping that he can schedule a multi-team Saturday competition some time later this spring to compensate for the lost action.

The area track and field teams, including Bemidji, are itching to perform outside but they will have to wait a bit longer before they can trade their indoor spikes for the outdoor variety.

Because of the lack of outdoor options Bemidji State track and field coach Craig Hougen has set up another indoor meet for Thursday and the Lumberjacks will be among at least 13 boys and girls programs that will participate.

The meet will begin at noon at the Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center and is scheduled to end about 6 p.m.

The indoor competition will help Bemidji replace Friday’s lost outdoor meet at Moorhead. The softball team also will be sidelined Friday as its home game against Grand Forks Central has been cancelled.

Saturday’s softball games at Detroit Lakes against Thief River Falls and Detroit Lakes have also been postponed. No makeup date has been announced.
