SOFTBALL: Minnesota State sweeps BSU

SAVAGE – In its final day of play on the first weekend of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action, the Bemidji State softball team was shut out in a sweep by Minnesota State Mankato in a doubleheader, 15-0 and 8-0, at the Savage Community Dome in Savage. The first game went just five innings, while the second game only reached inning No. 6.

With the two losses, BSU now stands at 7-16 overall on the season with a 1-5 mark in conference play.

Using a monster second inning and flawless pitching from Courtney McKelvogue, the Mavericks cruised to a 15-0 victory in the first game of the day. McKelvogue tossed a perfect, five-inning came in which she piled up nine strikeouts, including strikeouts of the first five Bemidji State hitters of the game.

Allison Roberts fell to 1-2 on the season thanks in large part to an 11-run second inning by MSU.

In Game 2, the Mavericks scattered eight runs over four different innings en route to an 8-0 win. Junior Allie Duellman gave up eight runs (only three earned) over five innings as the BSU defense committed five errors in the loss. Duellman dropped to 2-6 on the year.

Offensively, Bemidji State was only able to get on base four times in the game. Molly Arola went 1-for-2 and drew a walk while Cassie MacArthur doubled and reached on an error.

The Beavers take on Minot State Wednesday in Minot before returning to Bemidji next weekend to open its home slate against Wayne State and Augustana.
