BASEBALL: Baumann helps BSU split NSIC opener

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Senior lefty Phil Bray pitched a gem and senior shortstop Lewis Baumann hit two home runs as the Bemidji State baseball team earned a split against Concordia-St. Paul Friday night in Sioux Falls.

The Beavers beat the Bears 2-0 in 10 innings in the first game of their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader before falling 5-4 in game two, snapping a six-game winning streak.

In game one, senior Matt Ellinghuysen drew a one out walk to set-up Baumann’s home run left center in the top of the 10th inning, breaking what had been a scoreless pitching dual.

Bray threw eight scoreless innings, allowed just three hits and fanned 13 batters to tie a career-high.

Senior Ryan Brezinski came in and eared his second win of the season after pitching two innings and allowing no hits with two strikeouts.

BSU (10-8, 1-1 NSIC) had eight hits off C-SP’s Adam Kramer and Griff Kilber, who took the tough-luck loss.

In the second game, BSU got on the board with two quick runs in the top of the first but the Bears (8-6, 1-1) scored single runs in the first, second and third innings to take a lead.

They got some insurance with a two-run sixth, which they’d need after BSU’s top of the seventh.

Baumann launched a solo homer to cut Concordia’s lead to 5-3, followed by singles from Chad Hansen and Trevor Purvis.

The runs forced a pitching change – Tyler Brekke replaced Andy Fagley – but the first pitch from Brekke nailed Logan Kalis.

However, the reliever settled in after the poor first throw and got the next two outs to secure a victory.

Senior right-hander Ryan Anderson went the distance on the mound for BSU and allowed the five runs (four earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and zero walks.

Baumann had two of the nine Beaver hits, going 2-for-3. He entered the series leading the league in home runs with three and upped his total to five with two on the evening. Purvis also posted two hits.

The teams were scheduled to return to the field Saturday for another doubleheader but the game was not complete at presstime.
