Bemidji's Sam Howard finishes ninth in diving at state meet

MINNEAPOLIS – Sam Howard capped his state meet experience by finishing ninth in the Class A diving event Saturday at the University of Minnesota pool.

The junior at Bemidji High School who was third at last weekend’s Section 5A meet, entered Saturday’s final three dives in seventh with 233.05 points but he slipped to ninth after scoring 94.9 points Saturday.

Joe McGrath of Hill-Murray took the diving championship with 397.25 points. Michael Aasness of Fergus Falls, who won the Section 5A meet last week, finished second at the state competition with 388.80 points.

Howard was hoping to place eighth at the state but he fell just a little short of that goal. Claiming eighth was Mathew Bethke of Sauk Rapids who scored 341.25.

Tyler Hemp of Bemidji claimed 14th Saturday in the 100 breast stroke consolation race, finishing in 1:02.73.

Alec Kandt of Simley won the race in 56.52

Also representing the Lumberjacks in Saturday’s state consolation action was the 200 medley relay unit of Nate Gubbels, Hemp, Matt Arndt and Nick Gubbels. The foursome finished 15th with a time of 1:44.53.

Breck-Blake won the race in 1:36.15.

Bemidji finished 30th as a team with 16 points. A pair of private schools, St. Thomas Academy and Breck-Blake, claimed the top two spots. St. Thomas Academy tallied 263 and Blake-Breck had 177.
