BEMIDJI – After one day of the Section 5A swimming and diving meet, the Bemidji Lumberjacks have put themselves in good position for today’s finals.

“It went very well for us today,” Bemidji head coach Woody Leindecker said following the preliminary heats Friday at the BHS gym. “We have a lot of swimmers that made the championship finals, and a lot of them went a long way to get there. Some of our guys were seeded pretty deep but still made the finals.”

Eli Wright, seeded 14th in the 200-yard freestyle, qualified for the finals in eighth place with a time of 1 minute, 58.47 seconds. He also qualified for the finals in the 500 freestyle from 10th seed.

In the 100-butterfuly, Matt Arndt also turned in a good performance from a 10th seed to qualify in sixth place at 59.13.

Junior Tyler Hemp also had a good day, qualifying for finals in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

“He’s under the state cut in the breast,” Leindecker said. “He just needs to do it again in the finals.”

Hemp finished the 100 breast in 1:03.99; the automatic state qualifying time is 1:04.70.

The Lumberjacks also have a pair of relay teams in good position for today’s final: the 200 medley, which finished third, and the 400 freestyle, which made good time in their seventh-place finish.

“They’re both in good position to qualify,” Leindecker said.

The section meet continues today with diving preliminaries at 10 a.m. Finals for both swimming and diving continue in the afternoon.
