BHS skiers claim individual wins at Maplelag
CALLAWAY -- The Bemidji High School Nordic skiing teams came within a point of sweeping the North Star Invite Thursday at Maplelag Resort in Callaway. The Lumberjack boys prevailed by 12 points over Moorhead and the girls nearly matched their result, coming up a point short to the host Spuds, 226-225.
Bemidji skiers won the individual races in both divisions with Logan Jensen claiming the boys title and Sadie Hamrin the girls.
Jensen clocked a time of 18:08.94 to finish ahead of teammate Soren Dybing in second place (18:41.78).
“(Jensen) really turned it on and had a beautiful race today,” said BHS coach Mark Walters on the freshman’s win. “I’m really happy to see that. Really proud of him.”
Four other Bemidji skiers also finished in the top 10, and in order to round out the team’s results. Zac Skoe took fifth (19:06.85), Nick Palmer sixth (19:07.39), Sam Hodgson seventh (19:28.86) and Tommy Saxton eighth (20:12.98).
In the girls race, Hamrin finished more than a minute ahead of the next skier, racing to a time of 19:40.61. Kinley Prestegard took third (21:03.04) and three other Jacks cracked the top 10 with Gwen Youso in sixth (21:39.32), Sarah Pollock in ninth (22:30.41) and Damaris Berg in 10th (22:59.75). Alyse Stone (24:07.62) and Demi Fisher (24:49.14) placed 14th and 15th, respectively.
“The top three girls are skiing so well,” Walters said, “and we just need to find a little more depth there in a week and a half and just see how it plays out at sections.”
A pair of TrekNorth skiers also competed in the boys event. David Carlson (22:57.7) and Blake Bergeson (24:05.16) finished 18th and 22nd, respectively.
Thursday’s meet was the last of the regular season for the Lumberjacks. Next up for them is the Section 8A meet, which has been moved from Camp Ripley to Maplelag due to better snow conditions at the latter site. The meet will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 6.
