Bemidji Pewee AA team to participate in Hockey Day In Minnesota festivities

This Saturday marks the seventh annual “Hockey Day In Minnesota” celebration.

And while the Bemidji State men’s hockey team won’t even be in the state of Minnesota this weekend – they travel to Michigan Tech Friday and Saturday – local hockey fans can still get in the spirit with numerous hockey activities taking place that day.

Grand Rapids will be hosting part of the official celebration with a series of games outdoors on Pokegama Lake. And a Bemidji team will be taking part in the festivities.

The Bemidji Peewee AA team will be facing off against the Grand Rapids Peewee AA squad at 7:10 p.m. Friday night.

Bemidji coach Neil Huewe said it will be a great experience for his team.

“It’s pretty cool,” Huewe said. “The kids will be playing on the lake under the lights. We’re glad to have this opportunity.”

Huewe said it’s the first time a Bemidji Peewee team has participated in Hockey Day In Minnesota celebrations, although he said the Bemidji Bantams participated in the event when it was held in Moorhead in 2011.

Following Friday night’s Peewee and Bantam games on Pokegama Lake, Saturday will feature a trio of outdoor high school games: Eagan will take on Hibbing at 10 a.m., the Grand Rapids boys will face off against Benilde St. Margaret’s at 1:30 p.m. and the Grand Rapids/Greenway girls will play Hibbing at 4 p.m.

All three games will be televised on Fox Sports North, along with the Minnesota vs. North Dakota game at 5 p.m. and the Wild’s home opener against Colorado at 8 p.m.

While the Bemidji High School teams will not be participating in the outdoor celebration in Grand Rapids, the Sanford Center will be hosting a Lumberjacks doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

The BHS girls will take on River Lakes at 2 p.m. while the Bemidji boys will host Hermantown at 6 p.m.
