WOMEN'S HOCKEY: St. Cloud tops Bemidji State 4-2

ST. CLOUD – In its first game of the New Year, the Bemidji State women’s hockey team rallied to take a third-period lead over St. Cloud State, but fell short in a 4-2 loss at the National Hockey Center Friday afternoon.

The Beavers (3-14-2, 2-12-1-0 WCHA) and Huskies (8-12-1, 4-11-0) were caught in a defensive stalemate again until SCSU’s Michelle Burke collected a Skye Kelly rebound and beat BSU goaltender Abby Ryplanski to give St. Cloud the 1-0 lead at the 13:15 mark of the second period. The score held through the second intermission.

Ryplanski finished with 24 saves in her first start since Nov. 9, returning from injury.

Bemidji State staged a furious rally in the early stages of the final frame when sophomores Natasha Kostenko and Kristin Huber scored 29 seconds apart to give the Beavers a temporary 2-1 lead.

Alex Citrowske and Megan Lushanko assisted on Kostenko’s team-leading sixth goal of the season, while BSU conference scoring leaders Emily Erickson and Sadie Lundquist picked up helpers on Huber’s tally.

St. Cloud, however, would go on a run of its own, scoring three consecutive goals to steal the win late in the third.

Hanna Brodt and Molli Mott scored in rapid succession to put SCSU up 3-2 with 7:08 remaining in regulation. Brodt registered her first goal of the season and Mott capitalized on the Huskies’ lone power-play chance of the game 49 seconds later.

With Ryplanski pulled for an extra attacker, BSU generated multiple scoring chances, but could not convert before Julia Gilbert sealed the St. Cloud win with an empty-net goal with 22 ticks remaining.

Bemidji State will finish its season series against SCSU at 2:07 p.m. today.
