BEMIDJI – Grand Rapids defeated the Bemidji boys swimmers and divers 115-71 Thursday at the BHS pool but Lumberjacks coach Woody Leindecker wasn’t concerned about the team score or finish.

“We had some good times and some good swims,” Leindecker said. “With this team it will be fair to judge their performances at the section meet and not before. We are making improvements and we want to continue to improve through the section meet.

“In some sports, where seeding is important, won/loss records mean something but in swimming dual meet results mean absolutely nothing,” the coach continued. “The only things that are important are the individual times.”

During Thursday’s meet the Lumberjacks had many season-best times. Individually they posted three event wins and added another victory in the 400 free relay.

Nick Gubbels, Tyler Hemp, Nate Gubbels and Wyatt Yartz teamed for the relay triumph as they combined for a time of 3:41.72.

Grand Rapids’ top team finished in 3:41.96.

Hemp also won the 200 individual medley (2:20.08) and the 100 breast stroke (1:09.61). Bemidji’s other event winner was Sam Howard who claimed the diving with a score of 211.85.

Contributing seconds for the Jacks Thursday were the 200 medley relay unit of Nate Gubbels, Hemp, Matt Arndt and Nick Gubbels (1:51.49), Arndt in the 100 fly (1:06.98) and Eli Wright in the 500 free (5:57.70).

Bemidji returns to action Saturday at the Detroit Lakes Invitational.
