GIRLS BASKETBALL: Moorhead tops Bemidji 62-55

MOORHEAD – Bemidji kept it close Tuesday night against Moorhead, but couldn’t close the gap.

As a result, the Lumberjacks are still looking for their first win. They fell to the Spuds 62-55 despite a 26-point effort from senior Jess Yost.

“Right out of the gate, we had a bad start,” BHS head coach Rick Kehoe said. “We turned the ball over. We’re out of sync still.”

The Lumberjacks (0-7) fell behind by 15 points early, but at one point had cut the Spuds lead to eight. But three straight turnovers swung the deficit back to 15, and the Spuds (3-5) led 39-28 at halftime.

In the second half, the Lumberjacks outscored the Spuds 27-23 but their first-half deficit had been too great and time ran out.

“We just need to put it together,” Kehoe said. “We handled their press and got some open looks against this team. We had lots of open shots, we just missed.

“We just need to work on the little things and we will get better.”

Yost made 10 field goals and was 5-for-10 from the free throw line for her 26 points. Greta Steever was the other Lumberjack in double figures with 11.

Hailey Wixo led the Spuds with 20 points while Kelli Tonn added 19.

The Lumberjacks return to the court Friday when they travel to Buffalo.
