WRESTLING: Bemidji finishes fourth at Big Bear

CASS LAKE – Bemidji headed home from the Big Bear wrestling tournament hosted by Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena without an individual champion but the Lumberjacks did return with seven place winners including three athletes who finished second.

“The kids wrestled very well,” said BHS coach Rance Bahr. “It would have been nice to have a champion but to place more than half of our wrestlers in a field as tough as this is impressive.”

Hutchinson took the team title with 213 points while Willmar was second at 164.5, Thief River third at 151.5 and the Lumberjacks fourth at 148.

Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena finished 17th with 78 and Fosston-Bagley was 28th with 44.

Claiming seconds for the Jacks were Brian Maas at 113, Kade Johnson at 170 and heavyweight Alex Johnson. Craig Maas was fourth at 132 and earning sixth-place finishes were Logan Crosby at 126 and Drew Peterson at 160. Tyler O’Beirne was eighth at 106.

In Saturday’s semifinals Brian Maas edged Wyatt Becker of Badger-Greenbush-Middle River 7-6 but his hopes for a title ended with a 9-5 loss to Abbot Aho of Fergus Falls in the title match.

In the 170-pound semifinals Kade Johnson pinned Dylan Hultunen of United North Central in 2:56 but he also was denied a title when Nathanael Holecek of Thief River Falls stopped Johnson 15-5.

Kade Johnson had a 4-1 record in the tournament and all four of his wins were by pins.

Alex Johnson also had four pins before losing in the final. In the semifinals Johnson stopped Max Carlson of New York Mills in 1:58 but in the championship match he dropped a 5-1 decision to Cass Herzog of Willmar.

Craig Maas was pinned by Ben Baumgartner of Park Rapids in the 132-pound semifinals but advanced to the third-place match by stopping Austin Miley of Willmar 10-6. Craig Maas lost 13-6 to Cody Weiland of Crookston in the battle for third.

Logan Crosby was 3-0 Friday and advanced to the semifinals of the 126-pound division but he had to miss Saturday’s action because of illness and finished sixth.

Drew Peterson had a tough day Saturday, losing three matches and finishing sixth at 160 pounds.

O’Beirne went 0-2 Saturday and finished eighth.

“We could tell that the kids were getting worn down at the end,” Bahr said. “We wrestled Grand Rapids on Thursday and then had two long days against tough competition at the Big Bear.

“Overall, the kids did an outstanding job and represented their community very well,” the coach continued. “I think they are starting to realize that they can compete against the best teams in the state.”
