INDOOR FOOTBALL: Axemen win big in exhibition opener, rout semipro Minnesota Sting 74-7

BEMIDJI — Dixie Wooten’s first game as Bemidji Axemen head coach couldn’t have gone much better.

The Indoor Football League team kicked off their second season with a 74-7 victory over the semipro outdoor team Minnesota Sting in an exhibition game Sunday afternoon at the Sanford Center.

The Axemen posted 322 offensive yards to go along with their 74 points, which is second-most in team history. The most points scored by the Axemen was 92 against Wyoming on March 3, 2014.

But being as this was an exhibition game, the Axemen were able to spread the ball around.

EJ White led the Axemen with 119 yards on 8-for-12 passing and one touchdown, while Terrance Owens threw for 56 yards on an efficient 6-for-8 passing and a touchdown.

Eight different receivers caught at least a pass for the Axemen, who had 175 total yards through the air.

Josh Jarboe led the way with three catches for 23 yards and a touchdown while Sheldon Galloway caught the other touchdown grab.

On the ground, the Axemen had 155 yards, led by Mulku Kalokoh, who ran for 50 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.

Former Bemidji State running back Avery Walker had nine carries for 43 yards and a team-high two touchdowns.

Seven total Axemen carried the ball at least once.

Defensively, Bemidji’s Jory Johnson scored on a 3-yard interception for a touchdown to set the tone for the night: Tough defense.

The Axemen held the Sting to just nine total yards, while getting six interceptions and two fumble recoveries for eight total turnovers.

Bemidji sacked the Sting five times including two from Silivio Diaz.

Matthew Birr led the Sting with 47 yards passing, including a 35-yard touchdown pass from to Mike Sorensen for their lone score in the game in the second quarter.

The Axemen now have 20 days to prepare for their first official game Feb. 28, when they will host defending IFL champions Sioux Falls Storm at 7:05 p.m. at the Sanford Center.
