PERHAM — The Bemidji Post 14 American Legion baseball team survived the first of two elimination games Saturday afternoon at the Minnesota Sub State 14 American Legion baseball tournament, but couldn’t keep the momentum going later in the day.

Bemidji notched a 12-8 win against Detroit Lakes in the early game but fell to the top-seeded Moorhead Blues 17-6 in seven innings in the second game of the afternoon.

“Moorhead hit the ball incredibly hard all day,” Bemidji head coach Nate Blumhagen said. “They played well and we ran out of gas after the early game.”

In the opener against Detroit Lakes, Bemidji trailed 5-4 going into the fifth inning but a four-run fifth helped give them the lead.

James Hendricks had a pair of home runs and a double in the game to lead Bemidji while Connor McNallan also homered.

Seth Anderson got the win for Bemidji while Parker Lucas also pitched in relief.

“We kind of pieced it together for that one,” Blumhagen said. “We were trying to make our way through this losers bracket and we did a good job surviving against Detroit Lakes to make it to the Moorhead game.”

In the nightcap Bemidji got some offense going early with a five-run third inning, taking a 5-2 lead with runs from Lucas, McNallan, Erik Fitzgerald and Collin Rutledge.

Tony Geerdes had a two-RBI single to plate Rutledge and McNallan.

However, the lead didn’t last long.

A nine-run fourth inning capped by a Drew Anderson grand slam broke the game wide open in favor of the Blues.

Anderson went 4-for-5 with three singles, the grand slam, two runs scored and seven RBIs to lead the Blues.

Moorhead added to its lead with three runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings.

Bemidji managed just one more run in the game when James Hendricks doubled and scored on a passed ball in the fifth.

Matt Morgan started and took the loss for Bemidji; Tom Revering and McNallan also threw for Post 14.

Zach Schroeder got the win for Moorhead.

“We fought hard all day,” Blumhagen said. “But we had a couple of bad plays, a couple of errors and they were just hitting the ball so well, it was rough.”

Moorhead, the top seed in the tournament, moves on to face the loser of the championship semifinal between defending champions No. 4 Alexandria and No. 7 Fergus Falls, which was scheduled for Saturday night.

Today’s elimination game against Moorhead is scheduled for 1 p.m., with the final being played at 4 p.m.
