COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Bemidji State men’s hockey team started off strong in the first period of Saturday night’s WCHA game against Colorado College.

The Beavers controlled the puck in the first half of the first period, even getting a goal to show for it.

But the Tigers came back with a vengeance, scoring six times – including three times in the third period – to capture the 6-3 win.

The Beavers (2-3-1, 1-2-1 WCHA) and the Tigers (7-3, 4-0) totaled only four shots in that first 10 minutes of play, with BSU holding the 3-1 edge. But the third shot for the Beavers happened to be a goal.

Freshman Cory Ward collected a rebound off a shot from senior captain Ben Kinne and beat CC goaltender Joe Howe at the 11:11 mark of the period.

From there, though, the Tigers dominated, outshooting BSU 7-0 and scoring twice on the power play.

Scott Winkler scored CC’s first goal at 13:26, capitalizing on a Markus Gerbrandt boarding penalty to tie it up. Then Mike Bovin gave the Tigers the 2-1 lead just two minutes later after BSU’s Matt Prapavessis was called for slashing.

In the second period, the Beavers evened the score with another power-play goal.

Aaron McLeod went between the circles, received feeds from Brance Orban and Danny Mattson, and tied the game at the 4:51 mark.

But the Tigers regained the lead just before the end of the second period.

With 41.2 seconds to go in the frame, Andrew Hamburg scored to give the Tigers a lead they wouldn’t give back. He redirected a shot from Jeff Collett to beat BSU goaltender Andrew Walsh to end what was generally a sloppy period for both squads.

Colorado College tacked on two more goals in the third period, both scored by William Rapuzzi.

Gerbrandt added a goal with 1:28 left in the third, but by then it was too late for BSU, as CC added an empty-netter with seconds left.

Walsh took the loss for BSU, giving up five goals and making 21 saves on 27 shots.

Howe got the win for CC, making 25 saves on 28 shots.
