VOLLEYBALL: Minnesota-Duluth sweeps Bemidji State

DULUTH – The Bemidji State volleyball team dropped a straight sets match to nationally-ranked Minnesota Duluth Thursday 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-15) at Romano Gymnasium in Duluth.

Senior outside hitter Bethany Thompson continued her quest for 1,000 kills, leading the Beavers with 10 kills on 30 attempts. Chelsea Frison posted five kills on just eight attempts with an error for an impressive .500 hitting percentage, while sophomore setter Courtney Volkmann served up 25 assists and a block and Rachel Craig collected three blocks.

Thompson finished the match with 967 career kills, leaving her 33 short of the 1,000-kill plateau with three regular-season matches remaining on the 2012 schedule.

Kate Lange paved the way for the UMD victory, recording a match-high 15 kills as the No. 5 Bulldogs outhit the Beavers .450 to .152 on the night.

The Beavers fall to 4-20 overall with a 2-15 mark in NSIC play, while the Bulldogs improved to 24-2 on the season and 15-2 in league play.

Bemidji State returns to BSU Gymnasium Saturday to host St. Cloud State (6-18; 2-14 NSIC). The match, set for a 3 p.m. start, is the Beavers’ final home contest of the 2012 regular season.
