High school roundup: Bemidji area teams bounced from playoffs

BAGLEY – The seasons have come to an end for all of the area football teams.

In the 8-2A quarterfinals Bagley lost to Barnesville 57-8.

Barnesville, which entered the postseason rated No. 3 in the state’s Class 2A rankings and owned an 8-0 record, led the Flyers only 7-0 after the first quarter.

But Barnesville proved too tough and too experienced and eventually ended Bagley’s season.

“I’m really proud of the way our guys worked hard all season,” said Bagley coach Brandon Schwegel.

“We are going to miss our seniors who provided a great foundation for our program. We thank them for their leadership and effort this season.”

The Flyers ended with a 5-4 record.

Barnesville will face Hawley 8 p.m. Friday at the Fargodome for the section title.

In Section 7A action Blackduck was the lone quarterfinal winner among the area teams, blanking Mesabi East 38-0. The Drakes, however, saw their year come to an end Friday when they lost 42-12 at Cook County. Blackduck finished with a 6-4 record.

Friday’s other semifinal saw Barnum zap Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 50-0. Barnum and Cook County will square off Thursday at Public Schools Stadium in Duluth for the section crown.

Cass Lake-Bena ended 1-8 after falling 70-6 to Cook County in the Section 7A quarterfinals.

In Section 7 Nine-Man play, Kelliher-Northome dropped a 26-6 decision at Ely on Friday in the semifinals. Bigfork slapped Chisholm 14-6 in the other semifinal and will meet Ely 4:30 p.m. Friday in Duluth for the championship.

Kelliher-Northome ended a very successful season with seven wins in 10 games.

Clearbrook-Gonvick lost 7-6 to Kittson Central in the Section 8 Nine-Man quarterfinals. Kittson Central lost 22-21 Friday to Stephen-Argyle while Goodridge-Grygla-Gatzke thumped Win-E-Mac 41-20 in the other semifinal.

Those teams will square off 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fargodome for the title.

Following that game Nevis will take on Ada-Borup for the Section 6 Nine-Man crown.

Nevis is 10-0 and has playoff victories over Rothsay (46-8) and Norman County East (18-13).

Ada-Borum has beaten Ulen-Hitterdahl (46-14) and Hillcrest Lutheran Academy (27-14).

Clearbrook-Gonvick is the lone area volleyball team alive in the Section 8A playoffs as the Bears outgunned Cass Lake-Bena 31-29, 25-13, 25-19 last week in the second round of the tournament.

C-G, the fourth seed in the 8A field, will tangle with top-seeded Lake of the Woods 6 p.m. today at Bemidji State. Today’s 7:30 p.m. match pits No. 3 Fosston against No. 2 Mahnomen.

Those winners will tangle 6 p.m. Friday at Bagley in the section semifinals. The championship match will be Saturday at UM-Crookston.
