CROSS COUNTRY: Moorhead beats Bemidji in boys, girls races

BEMIDJI – The Bemidji High School cross country team didn’t run perfectly Tuesday afternoon against Moorhead. Neither the boys nor the girls picked up the team win at Greenwood Golf Course, but BHS head coach Ryan Aylesworth was happy with the Lumberjacks’ performance just a week before the section race.

“It was a solid day,” Aylesworth said. “We know we have to fine-tune some things before sections, but this was a good test on the same course.”

The boys, without Sam Carlson and Seth Neubeck, fell to Moorhead 27-30. The Spuds had the top three runners in Ezra Olson (who won the race at 17:00.87), Matthew Lillehaugen and Josh Young. That turned out to be enough points to take the meet. The Jacks raced well, taking the next five places (Nos. 4-8).

“The boys ran as a solid pack today,” Aylesworth said. “We were able to put seven runners in front of their fifth guy, but they finished 1-2-3 and that was enough for them. But I’m pleased with our effort.”

Elias Hendrickson paced the Jacks at 17:35.55, while Kyle Sagedahl (17:36.92), Adam Lewis (17:37.96), Billy Freyholtz (17:43.28) and Caleb Appleton (17:46.56) finished fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth overall, respectively. Noah Holter (18:22.06) and Cody Freyholtz (18:22.31) rounded out the Jacks’ varsity finishers.

TrekNorth didn’t run a full team, but Sebastian Holman led the way for the Sundogs, coming in at 20:00.43.

On the girls side, Jenna Truedson once again left her competition in the dust, winning with a time of 14:58.18.

That was almost 40 seconds faster than Malori Johnson of Moorhead, who took second at 15:34.37.

Bemidji’s Megan Serratore took a solid third place at 15:38.59, but Moorhead runners finished fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth, ninth and 10th to win the meet 24-37. TrekNorth’s Sarah Hamrin finished between those Moorhead runners with a time of 16:23.84 to place seventh overall.

“The girls ran a little conservative,” Aylesworth said. “They came on nicely at the end, though.

“It will be a good benchmark for sections next week.”

Rounding out Bemidji’s varsity runners were Morgan Sagedahl in 11th (17:05.93); Atomic Thorson in 14th (17:19.43); Nicole Erdmann in 16th (17:53.21); Emma Brokl in 18th (17:59.30); and Dani Gronhovd in 19th (18:05.40).
