Bemidji advances both doubles teams, Solberg to section quarterfinals

SARTELL – After falling in the Section 8AA team finals last week, the Bemidji High School tennis team rebounded nicely in Friday’s individual singles and doubles tournament.

One Lumberjack singles player and both doubles teams took their first steps in Friday night’s first round at Fitness Evolution in Sartell.

All of the Jacks first-round survivors also captured their second-round matches late Friday night.

Bemidji’s Jessica Solberg and both doubles teams (Amy Frosaker/Claudia Bellew and Olivia Dickenson/Annika Johnson) opened the first round with realtively easy wins.

Kenzie Schultz was the lone loser Friday night, as Alexandria’s Ellie Bergstrand topped Schultz 7-6, 6-1.

“Everyone played well,” BHS head coach Mark Fodness said. “Kenzie lost but actually played OK. She probably had the toughest draw.”

Solberg cruised in her match, topping Brainerd’s RoseMary Hunter 6-0, 6-0.

“Jess was in complete control of her two games,” Fodness said. “She was very aggressive and hit a lot of terrific approach shots and finished points at the net.”

In doubles play, Frosaker and Bellew defeated the Fergus Falls team of Livi Stigen and Madi Neuleib 6-0, 6-1.

Dickenson and Johnson defeated Moorhead’s Mallory Smith and Anna Steinwand 6-2, 6-1.

“Our doubles teams played very tough,” Fodness said. “Really aggressive play at the net. We gained control of all four matches early on and never let the other team get any momentum.”

In the second round Frosaker and Bellew topped Emily Seebold and India Fritz of Detroit Lakes 6-1, 6-1. Dickinson and Johnson blanked Jessica Larson and Jenna Hedstrom of Alexandria 6-0, 6-0 and Solberg advanced with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Dani Unruh of Detroit Lakes.
