Boys soccer: Bemidji secures share of conference title

EAST GRAND FORKS – The Bemidji boys soccer team clinched the Lakes-to-Prairie Conference title in style Monday evening, beating East Grand Forks 4-0 on the road.

“It’s a nice thing for the boys to earn tonight,” BHS head coach Rock Toward said. “The game was over fairly early and we were able to control the entire game.”

The Lumberjacks (11-2-1, 6-0 conference) scored all four of their goals in the first half then held on to beat the Green Wave (5-8-1, 4-3-1) in the second.

Isak Sommer didn’t waste much time putting the Jacks on the scoreboard, scoring six minutes into the game with help from Riley Brooks.

The Jacks didn’t get another goal until 20 minutes later.

Goalkeeper Connor McNallan booted the ball deep to Brooks, who ran it down, beat the EGF defender with a head fake then took a shot that made it past the keeper to the right to make it 2-0.

Three minutes later, Alex Schussman was fouled in the box and nailed the penalty shot to make it 3-0 Bemidji.

Joel Johannsen closed the scoring at the 37:30 mark, notching his first varsity goal in the process. Johannsen picked a defender’s pocket and beat the keeper with a rocket to make it 4-0.

The Lumberjacks managed 13 shots on goal compared to EGF’s two.

McNallan made two saves for BHS while Brandon Johnson made nine for the Green Wave.

“It was a good game, and we were able to rest some guys in the second half,” Toward said. “It was a good way for the guys to get ready for Moorhead. It will be a battle.”

The Spuds handed the Jacks their first loss of the season last week, and the Lumberjacks are looking forward to returning the favor Friday on their home turf. The game was rescheduled from Thursday due to Bemidji High School parent-teacher conferences.

After their final home game on Friday, the Lumberjacks travel to Hillcrest Monday for their final regular season contest. The Lumberjacks topped Hillcrest 2-1 earlier in the season, but the Comets have gone an impressive 8-1-1 since then. Their only other loss was to St. Cloud Cathedral, who the Lumberjacks tied in overtime.
