Bemidji drops shootout to Green Wave

EAST GRAND FORKS – Bemidji scored five goals Thursday but the Lumberjacks couldn’t stop East Grand Forks’ offense as the Green Wave gained a bit of revenge from two consecutive losses to the Jacks with an 8-5 victory on their home field.

“Usually when you score five goals you will win but both teams were out to win this game and East Grand Forks came out on top,” said BHS coach Kelly Schoonover.

“Bemidji and East Grand are big rivals. We beat them in the section final last year and we beat them earlier this year in Bemidji. And you could tell that they wanted to get us back.”

The Green Wave set the offensive tone five minutes in when Alex Arroyo beat Bemidji goalie Casey Palmer off Coco Piche’s feed.

Bemidji’s Rachel Bitter tied the game courtesy of a Maea Wall assist 11 minutes later but the Green Wave answered when Piche connected with help from Arroyo 17 minutes into the action.

EGF upped its lead to 3-1 at the 26-minute mark when Jayden Boushey and Lizzie Holkesvig teamed for a goal.

The 3-1 score lasted through halftime but the first 10 minutes of the second stanza produced an offensive explosion by both squads.

Bemidji opened the gates when Wall converted Bitter’s assist two minutes in. A minute later Arroyo notched her second of the day and Piche collected her second 60 seconds later.

The Green Wave upped its cushion to 6-2 at the 47-mark but the Lumberjacks countered with goals by Erin Booth at 48 minutes and Wall at the 50-minute stage.

East Grand Forks regained the momentum when Haley Mack scored with seven minutes to play.

Booth answered two minutes later to slice Bemidji’s deficit to 7-5 but Piche’s goal a minute later iced the win for the home team.

“We lost the game but I am proud of the girls because they played hard the entire way despite being down by two or three goals at times,” Schoonover said. “When the game was over we walked off the field bummed that we lost but for me, as a coach, I was happy with the effort.”

The Lumberjacks (6-4) will be home Saturday against Brainerd. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
