Bemidji 16-U softball team heads to nationals

CHANHASSEN - Bemidji's 16-U fastpitch softball team will be playing in the national tournament which begins today at Rice Creek Park in Shoreview.

The Renegades qualified for the national meet by winning the 16-team Border Battle in New Richland, Wis., in June. The team tuned for the national meet last weekend when it won the state championship in Chanhassen.

In the opener Bemidji stopped Shakopee 8-1. Jess Yost went the full six innings on the mound and struck out three. She did not allow a walk and yielded only two hits.

Yost also had four of Bemidji's 15 hits, including a home run. Courtney Black added three hits.

In the second game the Renegades nipped Hudson 7-6. Bri Neumann went the first five innings on the Bemidji mound and Yost earned the win with two innings of relief.

Jasmine Yerbich and Yost had two hits and Yost ripped another home run.

The Renegades then slapped East Ridge 10-5. Neumann belted a home run and Yost and Black each had two hits.

In the semifinals Bemidji belted Eden Prairie 9-0. Yost went the distance and also blasted a grand slam home run. Hanna Olson, Yerbich and Yost each had two hits.

In the championship game of the double-elimination tournament the Renegades blanked Minnesota Blast 5-0 to capture their fifth consecutive state title.
