Larson 15th at State Am

HASTINGS - Johnny Larson, who will begin defense of his Birchmont Men's Championship Monday at the Bemidji Town & Country Club, tuned for the tournament with a tie for 15th at the Minnesota State Amateur.

Larson began the tourney with a 5-over-par 76 on Monday and shot 74 on Tuesday. He capped his event with Wednesday's 73 for a 54-hole score of 223.

Frederick Van Rooyen of the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Club won the state amateur title with rounds of 72-68-73-213. Sharing second place at 216 were Sammy Schmitz of Valleywood, David Christensen of Elk River and Matt Schneider of Pokegama.

Thomas Strandemo of Mahnomen Country Club tied for 25th at 72-76-77-225. Strandemo will also be in next week's Birchmont Men's Championship field.

Bemidji State University 2008 graduate Clinton Cornell, who plays out of Pokegama in Grand Rapids, tied for 42nd with rounds of 76-76-77-229.
