BHS boys make section's second day

SAUK CENTRE - Kodi Craft and Elliot Leinen each shot 77 to lead the Bemidji boys golf team at Monday's first round of the Section 8-3A tournament held at Greystone Golf Course.

The Lumberjacks are in fifth place after the first 18 holes with a team score of 312. The top six teams advanced to today's second round.

Moorhead leads the pack at 298 while Buffalo shot 308, Alexandria 309, Brainerd 310, Bemidji 312 and St. Cloud Tech 316. The top team to miss the cut was Sartell which shot 33.

In addition to the 77s of Leinen and Craft, Trey Dale and Sam Starkey fired 79s. Completing Bemidji's scores were Ryan Erickson's 81 and Zach Richers' 85.

"With four scores in the 70s I'm very pleased with how we played," said Jacks coach Seth Knudson. "This has been our goal all season."

After today's action the top team and the top five individuals not on that team will advance to the state meet.

"Any scores in the 70s have a chance to make state as an individual but they will have to shoot the same or better Tuesday," Knudson said.

"Last year it took 156 to make state and this year I think it will be even lower because of the perfect weather conditions."

Katelin Craft and Morgan Williams advanced to today's individual action in the Section 8-3A meet at Long Prairie as Craft shot 88 and Williams 90 during Monday's first round.

Bemidji's other scores included Kelsey Isaacson's 95, Hailey Hinner's 98, Megan Dondelinger's 99 and Morgan Miller's 107.

The Jacks failed to advance in the team division, however, as they placed fifth with 371. Only the top four teams and the top six girls not on those teams made it to today's round.

The Lumberjacks shot 371 as a team and trailed the fourth-place team, Buffalo, by four shots.

"The girls tried very hard but we're young and we were a little nervous," said BHS coach Jeff Nelson. "We just need to become more tournament tough."

Monday's best round was carded by Alexi Bollant of Buffalo who shot 81.

After today's action the top team and the top five individuals not on that team will earn trips to the state meet.
