Hirt, offense lead the way as Bemidji High School baseball team improves to 18-1

DETROIT LAKES - Bemidji ran its record to 18-1 and extended the winning streak to 16 games with an easy 13-1 victory here Monday.

"It was a nice overall game," Lumberjacks coach Mike Fogelson said. "Ryan Hirt was smooth and in complete control on the mound and our offense got the runs early. Detroit Lakes never really threatened."

Bemidji dominated from the opening inning and a key Detroit Lakes error set the stage for what would become only a five-inning game.

Mitchell Hendricks singled with one out in the first stanza and, after Cody Rutledge was hit by a pitch, Hendricks scored when the relay to first on Colin Leif's fielder's choice was thrown into right field.

Cody Jenkins followed with a walk and Mason Bellew's single loaded the bases. Pinch runner Billy Baumgartner and Jenkins scored a few pitches later when Nick Conner's routine fly to the outfield was dropped.

BHS upped its cushion to 6-0 with three more runs in the second. Connor McNallan and Nick Hovila singled to start the rally and McNallan scored on Hendricks' groundout.

Rutledge was hit by a pitch for the second time in as many innings and gained third on Leif's single. Jenkins belted a double to left to score both runners.

The Lumberjacks added three runs in the third on singles by Nick Conner, McNallan, Hovila and Leif, a walk to Sam Dwyer and Rutledge's ground ball.

Bemidji ensured an early ending with four runs in the upper fifth. The lone hit in the inning was Hendricks' single. Rutledge was hit by a pitch for the third time and the stanza also included five walks.

Hirt lost his no-hit bid when Detroit Lakes scratched an infield hit in the fourth. The Lakers managed one more hit and scored their run in the fifth off McNallan who relieved Hirt to start the inning.

Bemidji will close the regular season Thursday at Moorhead.
